What is NordVPN: the tunnel, Dark Web Monitor and Threat Protection

NordVPN is a consumer virtual private network sold by Nord Security, a company founded in Lithuania in 2012. The app routes your traffic through the company's own servers over NordLynx, a protocol Nord built on WireGuard. That much has not changed in years. What has changed is everything sold around it. The paid plan no longer stops at a tunnel: the middle tier adds antivirus, an ad and tracker blocker, a password manager and a terabyte of cloud storage, and the top tier adds a dedicated IP address and NordProtect, an identity theft product with insurance attached. Every plan covers 10 devices at once and carries a 30 day money back guarantee.

Read the plan names and the shape of the company becomes obvious. Basic is a VPN. Complete and Complete Max are security suites that happen to include one. Buyers who want a tunnel and nothing else are now shopping at the cheapest end of a lineup built for someone else.

NordVPN features by plan: NordLynx, Threat Protection, password manager

The VPN part is the same on every tier, and Nord is unusually direct about that. What separates the three plans is everything sold around the tunnel, and two lines decide which one you need.

The antivirus is worth reading in parts rather than as one label. It scans downloads and deletes dangerous files, scans installed software for known flaws, warns when a site is known for scamming, flags dangerous links inside emails and checks crypto wallet addresses. The monitoring works the same way: it watches for an email address, a phone number, a national ID or Social Security number and credit card details appearing in leaks, and alerts as soon as any of them turns up.

The vendor claims 224 or more locations, speeds above 800 Mbps measured by independent tests, and an annual independent audit of its no logging claim. Call Protection, which flags suspected scam calls before you answer, is the newest addition.

Two things are worth doing on the day you subscribe. Put every household device on the same account before you count seats: ten connections sounds generous until a television, a router and two consoles have taken four of them.

Then enter the addresses you want watched into Dark Web Monitor. The feature only reports leaks for identifiers you have registered, so an unentered address is an unwatched one, and the monitoring you paid for sits idle until you do it.

There is also a free way to test the premise before paying. Nord runs a one-time dark web check on a single email address without an account, and states that the address is not stored, shared or otherwise used. Run it first. If nothing you own has leaked, the monitoring tier is a purchase you can defer.

The tiers differ by what surrounds the tunnel, never by the tunnel itself. Kill switch, split tunneling and Double VPN are base behaviour, not upsells.

ExpressVPN sits at the same entry rate and sells the opposite story: fewer bundled products, a longer reputation for speed, and a discount claim measured against its own month to month price rather than against a renewal. People who leave Nord for it are usually leaving the suite behind on purpose.

ProtonVPN

Proton VPN is the only name here with a genuine free tier, and it is run by a Swiss company that built its reputation on encrypted mail. Buyers who distrust bundles and want a tunnel they can test before paying start here.

CyberGhost

$2.19/mo-$12.80 vs entry

CyberGhost is the cheap end of this category. The entry rate is a fraction of Nord's, the product is a VPN rather than a suite, and the trade is fewer bundled services for a smaller bill.

NordVPN enters at $14.99 a month. That is above the $12.49 median this category sets, and level with ExpressVPN to the cent. One thing here beats the category norm. NordVPN states the basis of its own discount claims, savings measured against renewal prices, and the struck totals check out exactly. A vendor comparing its offer with the price you will actually pay is doing something most of its rivals avoid.

Then there is Complete Max. It renews at $301.08 a year while twelve separate payments of $21.99 total $263.88, so the customer who commits pays $37.20 more than the one who never did. Basic and Complete renew below a year of monthly billing, which is what a commitment is supposed to do. Our reading stops at Complete for that reason, and the case for the tier above it is a dedicated IP and NordProtect bought with both eyes open.

what drives this invoice

• the tier, which is the only real axis: all three cover ten devices, so the money buys software beside the tunnel rather than more connections.
• The renewal, charged yearly and fixed per tier at $139.08, $219.48 or $301.08 whichever prepaid term was bought.
• the term, which decides how long the intro runs and what leaves the account today: $65.88 for 12 months of Basic, $94.23 for 27.

when not to buy NordVPN

• You are buying Complete Max to keep: it renews at $301.08 a year against $263.88 for twelve monthly payments of the same tier.
• You need more than ten devices covered: the ceiling is ten on Basic, Complete and Complete Max alike, and no tier lifts it.
• You are buying for a company: this card has no team tier, and the business product is sold separately from five licences up.
• You want the antivirus, the vault or the 1 TB of storage on their own: they are sold only inside Complete and above, with the VPN attached.

what it does well

• Ten simultaneous connections on every tier, including the cheapest, where several rivals reserve device counts for upper plans.
• The discount claims state their own basis. Nord measures savings against the renewal price and prints that sentence beside the offer, which is a harder comparison than measuring against a month to month rate.
• NordLynx is the vendor's own protocol built on WireGuard, so the tunnel is not a rebadged third party client.
• Dark Web Monitor Pro watches phone numbers, card numbers and national ID numbers, not just email addresses, which is unusual inside a VPN subscription.
• A 30 day money back guarantee applies to every tier and every term, including the two year prepay.
• Kill switch, split tunneling, Double VPN and Private DNS are on every tier, so the security behaviour people actually rely on is not held back for upper plans.
• The dark web check is free and needs no account, so the claim behind the upper tiers can be tested before any money changes hands.

where it gets in the way

• There is no free tier. The only way to try the product is to buy it and use the refund window.
• Ten connections is the same number on the top tier as on the bottom one, so paying more never buys more devices.
• The middle tier charges for a password manager, antivirus and a terabyte of storage whether or not you already pay for those elsewhere.
• Complete Max renews at an annual figure that works out higher per month than its own month to month price, so the long commitment stops paying for itself once the intro term ends.
• The cloud storage allowance is fixed at one terabyte with no published price for more.
• NordProtect, the identity theft cover on the top tier, is not restated on the pricing page for every region, so buyers outside the United States should confirm it applies before paying for it.
• Meshnet availability is stated as varying by plan on the download page and is not mentioned on the pricing page at all, so the tier that carries it has to be confirmed before you buy for it.
• Monitoring only covers identifiers you enter yourself, so a subscription bought and left unconfigured watches nothing.
