The term you buy decides the first invoice and nothing after it. A 28-month term and a 15-month one land on an identical renewal, so the longer commitment buys a deeper first-term discount and no advantage at all once that term closes. Then the yearly charge starts.

Two prepaid terms, one ending. A first term at $2.99 a month and a first term at $4.99 both land on $99.95 a year for Basic, $119.95 for Advanced and $199.95 for Express Pro. The 28-month term and the 15-month term renew at the identical figure, so the longer commitment wins once and never again.
A prepaid term is one charge on day one
The plan page reads 'Billed $419.72 $83.72 for first 28 Months'. That is a single payment, not a monthly plan. Basic takes $83.72 up front on the 2-year term and Express Pro takes $209.72. Cancel in month three and month twenty-eight is already paid for.
Save 80% is measured against $14.99, never against $99.95
The vendor's own footnote says discounts reflect a reduction based on the current monthly service price for the tier. So 'Save 80%' compares $2.99 with $14.99, and the struck $419.72 is 28 months priced at $14.99. The renewal is never the baseline. Nothing on the page measures the offer against the $99.95 a buyer ends up paying.
eSIM data is missing from the monthly cards
Advanced and Express Pro list 3 GB of eSIM data on the 12-month and 2-year cards. Choose the same tier month to month and the line is not there. The term decides the feature. The footnote limits it to carrier-unlocked handsets, one redemption per account, starting when the paid subscription does.
Sales tax is added on top of every figure
All amounts are stated in USD with sales tax applied at checkout where applicable. The $83.72 term total is what the page shows, not what your card is charged. It depends on where you buy from.
The dedicated IP carries no published price
Basic and Advanced both show it as an available add-on. No figure appears anywhere on the pricing page. So the add-on route cannot be costed, and that leaves Express Pro at $22.99 a month as the only figure anyone can quote.
The money-back guarantee is for new users
Thirty days, with that qualifier printed on all three terms. A renewal is not a new subscription, so the guarantee is not an exit from month 16 or month 29. The refund window belongs to the purchase, and it closes long before the first term does.
What the ExpressVPN pricing page does not print
Three things we went looking for and did not find. An absence is a finding too: it is what a buyer cannot check before paying.

NordVPN runs $14.99 a month against $15 on ExpressVPN Basic.The entry rates match to the cent, so nothing is saved on the sticker. The difference lands at renewal, where Basic falls to $99.95 a year and the rival's to $139.08.
- Count what is left of your current prepaid term first: a 27-month commitment is money already spent.
- Move the devices in one sitting. Both sides count ten simultaneous connections, so nothing has to be retired.
- Cancel the old renewal before its date. The thirty-day guarantee on this side is for new users and covers you once.
Surfshark
Surfshark costs $15.45 a month against $15 on ExpressVPN.Surfshark counts no devices and ExpressVPN counts ten. A household running more connections than that loses something the published rates never show.
- Count the connections you actually keep alive, not the gadgets you own.
- Run both for a week if anyone streams from more than one country.
- If the count sits above ten, price Advanced or Express Pro rather than Basic.
ProtonVPN
ProtonVPN is $9.99 a month against $15 here.You are leaving a free tier to reach a paid one. Nothing in this lineup starts below $14.99 a month, whatever the term.
- Decide whether the extras are the point: the password manager and the email relay are what the money buys.
- Export anything living in the rival's bundle first, because those accounts do not travel with the tunnel.
- Start on the monthly rate. Prepay only once you are sure, because the term is charged in one go.
Is ExpressVPN worth it: fair at $99.95 a year, thin at $22.99 a month

ExpressVPN's standing rate is $14.99 a month on Basic against a $12.49 median across the four other VPNs we price, and $22.99 at the top of its own lineup. The figure everyone repeats is $2.99, which is the 28-month intro with an expiry date attached. The honest number is $99.95 a year. For ten devices, servers in 105 countries and a refund window, that is a defensible annual price, and it is nothing like the headline.
Higher up the lineup the value thins out. Advanced costs $24 more across a year of monthly billing and hands back tracker blocking, two devices and a bigger email relay, which is fair trade. Express Pro asks $72 a year over that, and most of what it returns is a dedicated IP the vendor refuses to price on its own. Our own reasoning inverts right there: if you genuinely need a fixed address, the tier we would otherwise argue against becomes the only published way to buy one.
- You are quoting the first term as the price. It ends on a date fixed at purchase, and $99.95 a year on Basic is the standing bill after it.
- You want a fixed IP without buying the top tier. The add-on has no published rate, so Express Pro at $199.95 a year is the only costed route.
- You need five licences or more. Bulk pricing is a conversation with sales, and nothing on the page lets you check what you are quoted.
- You want to try it first. There is no free tier, and the thirty-day guarantee is a refund for new users rather than a trial.
