What is Namecheap: a domain registrar with hosting, DNS and mailboxes

Namecheap is an ICANN-accredited domain registrar founded in 2000, and everything it built afterwards leans on that. Its own nameservers carry the DNS records, the mailboxes and the Supersonic CDN, which the vendor states will not work for a domain pointed anywhere else. Shared hosting arrives under the Stellar name in three plans. Managed WordPress is sold separately as EasyWP, under its own brand and its own site. There are also VPS boxes under the Pulsar name and dedicated servers. Every one of those lines assumes you registered the name here first, and the CDN simply will not run if you did not.

Read that as a registrar with hosting attached rather than a host that also sells names. The order matters, because the thing binding the products together is the nameserver setting, and nothing here is designed for a name registered somewhere else.

Namecheap features: Supersonic CDN, AutoBackup and Imunify360

Almost everything on the shared plans is the same on all three, and the vendor lists it page-wide rather than per plan: a 100% uptime guarantee, unmetered bandwidth, free website migration, free automatic SSL installation and free Supersonic CDN. AI for WordPress and an AI Website Builder sit in the same page-wide group.

The CDN carries a condition that is easy to miss and hard to work around. Namecheap states that Supersonic CDN is only available for domain names using its shared-hosting nameservers. So a site hosted here on a name kept at another registrar, still pointed at that registrar's DNS, gets the hosting and not the delivery network. Four counters do differ between the plans, and they are the ordinary ones: how many websites, how much storage, how many mailboxes and which security tools are switched on.

Read the shared plans as one specification with four counters attached and the picture is accurate. The interesting conditions are not in the columns at all: they are in the nameserver requirement and the datacenter selector.

Namecheap limits: one domain per plan, mailboxes and Cloud Storage

Five ceilings shape what a Namecheap account can actually do, and two of them are conditions rather than counters.

The two conditions do more work than the three counters. Where the account is provisioned and where the domain name lives decide more about this product than any number in the feature list.

Billing comes in monthly, yearly and two-year periods, and the advertised discount applies to a first purchase rather than to a renewal.

Three passes over this product since June, and the page changed shape between two of them.

The pattern is worth naming. The page has been publishing fewer figures and more conditions, and the conditions are the ones that decide whether a listed feature works.

Who should use Namecheap: domain owners, small sites and WordPress

Five situations this account suits, and four where the coupling to the name gets in the way.

The dividing line is the same in every case. If the name is here, this is a coherent product with an unusually low entry rate; if the name is elsewhere, a good part of what is advertised does not apply.

Namecheap alternatives: HostGator, Hostinger, hosting.com and SiteGround

Namecheap sits low in this category on entry rate, with one host beneath it and three above. The spread runs $0.83 to $35, which puts the median at $11.99. Three of the four open between $0.83 and $11.99, then the strip goes quiet until $24.99. The stretch worth noticing is the empty one above hosting.com, where nothing in this set appears again until SiteGround. None of the four is a registrar first, which is the difference that does not show on a rate axis.

Priced at $11.99 on Starter, this one lands $6.11 over the Namecheap entry and almost exactly on the category median. A useful reference point rather than a rival: it shows what the middle of this market charges for a comparable shared account.

Hostinger

$8.99/mo+$3.11 vs entry

Hostinger comes in at $8.99, $3.11 above this entry, competing on the same ground: cheap shared hosting with a control panel and a long list of included extras. Namecheap's own overview page prints a comparison against it, which says something about who the vendor thinks it is fighting.

HostGator

$0.83/mo-$5.05 vs entry

The one host in this set opening below us, at $0.83, $5.05 under the Namecheap entry. Shared hosting on cPanel in much the same tradition, without a registrar business underneath it, and without a delivery network tied to its own nameservers.

Comparing these on hosting specification alone misses what this account actually is. The others sell servers; this one sells a name and then sells somewhere to point it. The full ranking sits on the cloud hosting category page.

Is Namecheap worth it in 2026: our verdict on the registrar and host

Stellar at $5.88 a month sits under half the $11.99 middle across the nineteen cloud hosting tools we price. On published rates that is one of the cheaper doors in the category. The problem is not the price. It is that the second-term price does not exist on the page. A discount of 58 to 71 percent that excludes renewals implies a step upward, and nobody will size it for you.

Here is the inversion. That same monthly rate is the one figure a renewal cannot surprise you with, because month-to-month billing is sold at $5.88 and stays there. A buyer who skips the yearly discount never meets the missing number. The discipline costs $3.60 a month against the yearly rate on Stellar, and what it buys is knowing what the second year costs.

• the billing period: $5.88 a month standing, against first-purchase yearly and bi-yearly rates that expressly do not carry into renewal.

• You are budgeting past the first term: no renewal rate is published, and building one out of the discount percentages is guesswork we will not do for you.
• You want the refund as a safety net: starting on the trial removes the 30-day money-back guarantee, in the vendor's own words.
• You need a fourth website at the entry price: Stellar caps at three sites on 20 GB, and the next step is $7.88 a month.
• You need to know the upfront charge before you click: the plans print per-month equivalents and no annual or biennial total at all.
